How to Train With Your Cue Control Compass

Use the Cue Control Compass to build a clearer understanding of aiming, cue ball movement, and position play. Pool is full of concepts that can be easy to describe but hard to actually picture on the table. The Cue Control Compass turns those concepts into something physical you can see and practice with real shots.

There are three primary ways to use your Compass:

The Tangent Line: The visual tangent line on the Compass helps you understand where a sliding cue ball (no forward or backwards spin) naturally travels after it contacts an object ball.

The Ghost Ball: The ghost ball circle on the Compass helps you visualize the cue ball's ideal contact position for making a shot, using a visible reference in place of the invisible "ghost ball" that sits behind every object ball on its way to the pocket.

Fractional Aiming Benchmarks: These markings on the Compass help you develop a visual reference for different cut angles, based on how much of the object ball your cue ball appears to overlap from your shooting position.

Start with one concept at a time rather than trying to absorb all three at once. Trying to juggle the tangent line, ghost ball, and fractional aiming together before any of them feel natural will slow you down more than it helps.

Tangent Line

The tangent line helps you visualize the natural path of the cue ball after it contacts the object ball. There's an important condition attached to it: the cue ball will follow the tangent line only when it's sliding at the moment of contact, with no forward or backward roll. This is commonly called a stun shot and is achieved by hitting in the center of the cue ball. When it happens, the cue ball's natural path after contact runs on the tangent line 90 degrees from the object ball's path.

Think of the tangent line as your starting reference, not the only path the cue ball can take. It shows you where the cue ball goes when no spin is influencing it. Once you know that baseline, you can change your tip position to move the cue ball off of it, sending it above or below the line on purpose. Where you strike the cue ball decides which way it moves off the tangent line:

  • High tip position creates topspin, or follow, which sends the cue ball above the tangent line after contact.
  • Center or stun tip position, struck correctly for the shot distance, keeps the cue ball sliding at contact and traveling along the tangent line.
  • Low tip position creates backspin, or draw, which sends the cue ball below the tangent line after contact.

The exact amount the cue ball moves above or below the tangent line depends on several factors, including how high or low you hit on the cue ball, your shot speed, the distance between the cue ball and object ball, and how much that spin has changed by the time it reaches contact. What you're really building here is a feel for that relationship between your tip position and the cue ball direction after contact with the object ball. The more precisely you can control where you strike the cue ball, the more precisely you can control where it ends up.

To practice, use the Compass mat to shoot the same shot with three different tip positions on the cue-ball. First, hit the shot in the center of the cue ball so the cue ball is sliding at the moment it reaches the object ball. Watch where it travels relative to the tangent-line reference. It should travel along the tangent line if you achieved a successful sliding cue ball effect. 

Next, move your tip higher and repeat. The added topspin should carry the cue ball above the tangent line. Finally, move your tip lower and repeat with draw. The backspin should send the cue ball below the tangent line. As you continue to practice, experiment with different amounts of high, center, and low tip position, not just the extremes. You'll start to develop a feel for how much the cue ball's path changes as you move farther above or below center.

Knowing the tangent line and adjusting off of it isn't just about getting shape on your next shot, either. That same skill is what keeps you out of trouble on the table. It allows you to recognize where a stun shot would send the cue ball into a scratch, so you can adjust your tip position to avoid it. It's what lets you purposely break up a cluster of balls, since you can predict where the cue ball will end up after contact and use that path to aim for the cluster. It's also what makes carom shots (using the cue ball to contact one object ball on its way to pocketing another) more repeatable and predictable.

Ghost Ball Aiming

Ghost ball aiming gives you a visual way to determine where the cue ball needs to contact the object ball to make the shot. Imagine a second cue ball frozen directly behind the object ball, positioned along the line of the object ball and the pocket (see image below). This imaginary ball is called the ghost ball. If the real cue ball travels into the center of the ghost ball, the object ball gets sent toward the pocket.

The challenge is that the ghost ball isn't actually there. You have to visualize its position and then align your real cue ball to it. The Compass gives you a physical reference for this relationship, making it easier to understand what correct alignment looks like and to train your eyes to recognize it. On the Compass, the ghost ball is the circle with the white dashed outline and the green dot in the middle.

To practice, set up a shot and use the Compass to find where the ghost ball needs to be for the object ball to reach the pocket. Align your cue so the center of the cue ball is aimed at the center of the ghost-ball position, then focus on delivering the cue ball into that spot rather than just looking at the pocket. Start with short, easier shots near the pocket so you can build a clean feel for hitting the ghost ball accurately. Once those feel automatic, move on to shots with more angle, and eventually work in the shots you find difficult such as a tough cut or a long-distance shot. Set up that shot repeatedly and practice delivering into the ghost ball until it starts to feel as natural as the easy shots did.

An important thing to remember is that finding the ghost ball only tells you where to aim. It doesn't guarantee the ball goes in. You still have to deliver the cue accurately along that line, and plenty of missed shots have nothing to do with the ghost-ball position at all. Before you assume your aim was wrong, check the basics: is your dominant eye actually settled over the shot? Is your stance and grip consistent? Is your final stroke traveling straight through the cue ball, or does the tip drift off line as you deliver it? A shot can be aimed perfectly and still miss because of stance, eye alignment, or a crooked stroke. Learning to understand and separate aiming errors from stance, alignment, or execution errors is what actually helps you improve.

With repetition, you'll need the physical reference less and less, and you'll start recognizing the correct cue-ball alignment without needing to physically place or see a ghost ball.

Fractional Aiming

Fractional aiming gives you another way to visualize the contact required to make a cut shot. Instead of trying to identify the exact ghost-ball position for every shot, it uses familiar cue-ball-to-object-ball overlaps as visual references. This allows you to recognize shots you already know instead of aiming from scratch every time.

The common benchmarks, described by how much of the object ball your cue ball overlaps from your shooting position, are:

  • Full ball — a straight-in shot, with the cue ball traveling directly into the object ball and sending it straight ahead. It's the easiest of the four to recognize, since there's little to no angle to judge, close to a 100% overlap.
  • 3/4 ball — the cue ball appears to overlap roughly three-quarters of the object ball, leaving a visible sliver on one side.
  • 1/2 ball — the cue ball appears to split the object ball roughly down the middle, about a 50% overlap.
  • 1/4 ball — the cue ball appears to clip only about a quarter of the object ball.

These fractions are visual checkpoints. The goal is to train your eyes to glance at a shot and recognize which benchmark it most closely resembles.

To practice, place the Compass mat on the table with the arrow pointing toward a pocket, and leave it in the same place for the whole drill. Place an object ball on the mat where indicated.

Using the fractional markers on the Compass, set your cue ball at the full-ball position and shoot. Before you shoot, look at the shot: it should be straight in, with little to no angle, and easy to recognize as a full-ball hit. Try to connect that straight-in look with the label "full ball." Then shoot, and watch the object ball travel straight ahead toward the pocket.

Move the cue ball to the three-quarter-ball position for that same object ball and shoot again, then the half-ball position, then the quarter-ball position, pausing before each shot to look at the overlap the same way. As you move through the four positions, pay attention to how the visual overlap changes each time when you're down on the shot, from nearly full contact down to just a sliver. That visual change from one benchmark to the next is what you're trying to memorize.

Repeat the full sequence, full, three-quarter, half, quarter, several times from this same object-ball position. Because the object ball stays fixed while only the cue ball moves between benchmarks, you get a direct side-by-side comparison of how the cut angle changes as the overlap shrinks, without any other variable changing between shots. Once you can look at the cue ball's position before you shoot and correctly call out which fraction you're looking at, move the mat and object ball to a new spot on the table and run the same sequence again from a different angle.

Most real shots on the table won't match a fraction exactly, and that's fine. Once full, three-quarter, half, and quarter-ball feel familiar, you can judge shots that fall between them by comparing against whichever reference they're closest to. A shot that looks slightly thinner than a half-ball hit but not quite as thin as a quarter-ball hit gives you two known points to judge it against, instead of an unfamiliar shot you have to aim from zero.

Ghost ball aiming and fractional aiming are both answering the same underlying question: where does the cue ball need to be aimed to make the shot. Ghost ball aiming focuses on where the cue ball needs to be in the moment of contact. Fractional aiming focuses on what the overlap looks like from your shooting position. Neither replaces the other, and many players lean on both depending on the shot: ghost ball for finding the exact contact point, fractional references as a way to help recognize common angles and cut shots so you don’t have to start from scratch.

Why It Works

Most players learn pool by trial and error, hitting thousands of shots without ever building a clear mental model of why a shot worked or didn't. The Compass is built to shortcut that process by giving you physical, visual references for concepts that are normally invisible: the tangent line, the ghost ball, and the fractional benchmarks.

The tangent line helps show you where the cue ball is going to go so you can play shape on your next shot. Ghost ball aiming tells you where the cue ball needs to contact the object ball. Fractional aiming gives you a fast visual shortcut for recognizing common cut shot angles. When used together, they cover all parts a successful shot: making the object ball, and controlling the cue ball afterward.

The goal isn't to spend your whole playing career consciously placing a ghost ball or calculating a tangent line before every shot. It's to practice these references enough that they stop being something you calculate and start being something you see naturally.
